For thousands of years and in lands throughout the world, people facing important turning points in their lives have left their communities behind and ventured alone into the wilderness to seek insight, clarity, and self-awareness.

All of us, no matter what our ancestry, training, or beliefs, can find wisdom in Nature. On a Vision Arrow quest, sometimes called a wilderness rite of passage, you rediscover this innate knowing and how it can give you insights into where you are right now in your life. In the process you recognize how all your life has been a heroic journey you had to take, gain clarity on where you stand in the present, and bring forth awareness, courage, support, and practical steps for the path ahead.

Our quests take place in small groups in wild and beautiful places. The first part of the journey is devoted to getting clear about what old habits and perceptions you need to let go of. The heart of the journey is time you spend in solitude in the wilderness, varying in length from one to three days. Most people choose to fast during this time, to quiet the mind, expand the attention, and focus on what you’re really hungry for. The final part of the program is devoted to becoming thoroughly grounded in your experience and creating steps to bring it to life back home.

The time comes when every person who has quested for a vision or in some other way worked to a bring a vision into the world needs to re-explore what happened and how the insights of that experience relate to your current life. How have you lived your vision? Do you feel that you’ve let yourself or your vision down because you have not done what you intended? Does your original vision feel too big for you? Too small?

During his week-long retreat, held in a protected Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, where 400-year-old trees tower above you, you’ll explore what still has heart and meaning from your original vision quest… clarify where you are right now and what you are called to contribute to your community and your planet… and discover how you can reshape your vision to satisfy your own great love and the world’s great hunger. There will be a one-day solo in the beautiful old-growth forest.

The program will be held in the forests of western North Carolina. We’ll spend days in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, the protected habitat of 400-hundred-year-old trees, and nights in the Nantahala Campground just down the trail.

Guides: Trebbe Johnson and Eugene Hughes
Cost: $1050 (including 7 nights camping and most meals)

January 1-15, 2011
Sahara Vision Quest and Camel Caravan
More Info
Southern Algeria

Following the steps of intrepid seekers throughout the ages who have been drawn to the desert to fast and pray for guidance, we venture into the greatest desert of all: the Sahara. Our guides are a group of nomadic Tuareg, a matriarchal people known for their love of the desert, poetry, camels, and beauty.

Our base camp in the black basalt wonderland of southern Algeria is truly remote, reached after 1-2 days travel by Land Rover, followed by 3-4 days in a camel caravan. To undertake this quest, you must have an adventurous spirit and be prepared to sleep under the stars, immerse yourself in the ways of another culture, experience hot days and cold nights, live three weeks without a shower, and move fearlessly into a life of meaning and fulfillment.

Guides : Sabina Wyss, Trebbe Johnson, Adem Mellakh, and Tuareg hosts
Cost : $4,444 Swiss Francs, (approximately $4,250.00), including all meals, camping fees, riding camel, land transportation in the desert, and air travel from a European city to Tamanrasset, Algeria

“The ways and practices that you’ve collected to help us get to the bottom of ourselves had the ability to (without anguish) get inside me to locate forgotten places. A magician’s work I should say. I find myself more comfortable in my skin after dropping (jumping? ) into those days.”

Paul Vautaux
Bellingham, WA

“Now when I struggle I think of the sunshine in that abundant incredible meadow and of how, by exploring it, I explored myself. So much has shifted, both simple and significant. I sense the beckoning and excitement of my life and my next steps have a certain ease.”

Karen Thompson,
Collegeville, Pennsylvania
